And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my
Savior. For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; for behold,
from this time on all generations will count me blessed.” Luke 1: 46-49.
Mary is showing us the characteristics of a Christian who has totally given
his/her life to Christ. She is exalting or praising the Lord, her spirit is
rejoicing or glorying in God, and she has realized the unworthiness of her
flesh. It is easy for us to say “Well, of course she feels this way because,
after all, she is carrying the Lord Jesus in her womb. You can’t do better than
that.” But a moment’s reflection will cause us to realize that all of this is
true of ourselves as well. Christ has promised to live within us when we accept
Him by faith. We are carriers of His life. We have His Holy Spirit within
forever. Can I do less than Mary, or is there any limitation put upon me because
I can not sense the presence of Christ within my physical body? God is Spirit,
and my faith rests on the assurance of things unseen. (Hebrews 11:1). Some will
say “This is too much, you are carrying this too far.” No, it is truth. God has
spent His very life at the cross to make it true.
Today, Lord, make me more aware of Your life within me. I do not seek miracles,
or power, or prosperity—I just seek You. It is Your desire that I hold You above
all else. By faith I trust You to make all of this true in my life—bit by bit,
moment by moment, day by day. Keep my fleshly desires out of the way, and I
thank You. Amen.
