December 29
But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by
contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take
anything out of it either. And if we have food and covering, with these we shall
be content. 1 Timothy 6:6-8.
Of course we would think that godliness would always be a great gain. But here,
in these verses, it is only so when accompanied by contentment. God is clearly
indicating that the right kind of godliness, the kind that can only come from
our relationship to Jesus, is always associated with contentment on the part of
the believer. And wouldn’t you know, the contentment springs from the personal
relationship with Jesus through the indwelling Holy Spirit. There is no room for
contentment when we are striving for a false godliness that is based upon our
own, futile, self-righteousness.
Am I content with enough food and clothing? Or do I seek the ‘wants’ of this
world? Yes, I have often looked in all the wrong places for contentment. I need
to capture the mindset that says that my needs are already met in Jesus. He
watches, He waits for me, and He walks with me as I go through this life. It is
enough, it is true contentment to know He is by my side.
As I go about my business for the day, let it be a day of contentment. Lord
Jesus, You are the source of all peace and tranquility. You are the very
expression of our true eternal life—even here on earth. Let my attitude be one
of continual thankfulness and rejoicing. For You are with me, and I thank You.
Amen.
