December 28

And to whom did He swear that they should not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient?  And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.  Hebrews 3:18,19.

Perhaps our greatest failure before God is to not trust Him and His word.  God’s first intention for us is to believe in Him and to submit to His guidance over our lives.  He does not give us a list of things to do; instead He offers us His rest.  We totally miss His rest when we are disobedient and unbelieving.  Why are we so stubborn and determined to be self-sufficient?

The world system has trained us too well.  We are taught to make our own way—to use our intellect and education in a manner that makes us successful in the eyes of those around us.  Yet God has shown us another way—the way of grace and peace in Jesus.  That way starts with resting from our works and entering into His works.  We miss all of this as we fail to trust Him with every aspect of our lives.

We falsely assume that our knowledge of good and evil will suffice to get us through life with assurance of safety.  What is missing in this approach is the Christ-life.  Yes, we are to choose life, and that is life abundantly given to all whom would believe.  That life starts with rest.

Thank You, Father, for the design You have chosen for our lives.  In Adam we failed to respond, yet in Christ that life is still available and promising.  Only Your grace could have foreseen all of this—that man could still be made in Your image.  As I go through this day let me look for Your resting place, your sanctuary.  Then my heart will be like Your heart—one that pleases You and seeks Your purposes.  Thank You for allowing us to share Jesus.  Amen.
