December 21
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image,
according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over
the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26.
Much has been recently published about God’s purpose for
man. We are to infer that a purpose is the proper motivation to guide us. Yet
this verse clearly says that God’s purpose is make man into the image of the
triune God. We are to conform to the image of the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit. And the power to accomplish all of this will not come from our decision
to follow a purpose—the power will come directly from God and through God.
We are to rule as the Father rules. We are to serve as the
Son serves. We are to be comforters in the manner of the Holy Spirit. We can
be thankful that God will provide all the ways to accomplish this
transformation, for any other way would fail totally.
Submission to God, repentance, and acceptance of Christ
into our life are the keys to opening the promise of this image. No organized
plan of man, however well meaning, can accomplish any of this. Of course the
fellowship of believers, our prayer life, and our faithfulness in seeking the
Holy Spirit will lead to the growth that God desires.
Heavenly Father, we rejoice in Your purpose for our life.
There can be no higher goal than to become like You. We are undeserving, yet
You are forever giving. What joy we experience as we see You at work with us.
Thank You and Amen.
