December 14

For Thou art my lamp, O Lord; and the Lord illumines my darkness. For by Thee I can run upon a troop; by my God I can leap over a wall. As for God, His way is blameless; the word of the Lord is tested; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. 2 Samuel 22:29-31.

This is part of a song that David spoke after he was delivered from Saul and from his enemies. David always knew where to turn in his troubles. The world leads us, as well, along paths of darkness, and we need to clearly see the way that the Lord illumines for us. I am tempted to say that we become as ‘supermen’—able to run as fast as a bullet and leap tall buildings with a single bound. But this passage does not say exactly that. Instead we will attain new energies and purposes that will be in contrast to the world. Those of the world may truly wonder how we can continue to stand up and deliver deeds that honor our Lord.

My ways are often not blameless, so I need to seek His ways. His word has been tested over time, in all circumstances, and in the hearts of all people who would follow Him. So I need to be reminded of this each step of the way as I go through this day. He becomes my refuge.

Father, thank You for being my lamp, my strength, my righteousness, and my refuge. Everything in my life is really Yours, and I need to be constantly reminded of this. As we go together through this day I will trust You to guide me. There is no else I can truly trust. Thank You for just being You. Amen.
