December 10
Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of
those without strength and not just please ourselves. Let each of us please his
neighbor for his good, to his edification. For even Christ did not please
Himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell
upon Me.” For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our
instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures,
we might have hope. Romans 15:1-4.
This passage appears to be like the story of the Good
Samaritan. Paul is referring to being strong in faith, so that we can help
those who are weak in faith. Our motive is not to please self, but to find good
for the neighbor. It may be a kind word, a helping hand, or even involve some
sacrifice of time and money for the edification of the neighbor. We are
equipped for all of this in the new creation we enjoy.
We are messengers of hope. Those who do not know Jesus,
and for that matter even some of those who do, often fall into situations
lacking hope. We are to be there, fully aware of their need and willing to
share Jesus. They may not fully understand, and they may even offer criticism
of our actions in exchange. But we will not be deterred from reaching out to
them.
Father, today I ask to be available for service to my
neighbor. You have shown me that my neighbor is anyone whom I encounter. I
will be quick to offer help without expecting anything in return. You have
shown us that way of dealing with everyone through Your grace and love. We know
that hope does not reside in the schemes of this world. In contrast, Your ways
offer continual hope for all to see and experience. Thank You for loving us so
much. Amen.
