August 7
“God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6.
Pride was the sin that set Satan on his destructive path. If he has not stopped
us from becoming a Christian he will at least try to destroy our relationship
with our fellow man. There is nothing more devastating to relationships than a
proud, arrogant spirit. No one likes to be around a person with those traits,
and if we show that behavior our witness becomes one that will drive anyone away
from Christ.
It is so subtle, our pride. Am I harboring thoughts of being superior in
spiritual knowledge? Do I regard myself as being more approved by God? Do I feel
that my gifts are more useful than those shown by others? Am I closer to God? Do
I think my opinions are far better than others? The Lord is seeking a humble
heart, and He will go to any means to achieve that goal—even to the point of
allowing me to suffer great failures in my selfish endeavors.
Today Lord, please break me of any self-pride. If I am to boast let me boast
about You. You, alone, have suffered the test of the cross, the humiliation, and
the ridicule. And it was all for my good. Your grace has triumphed. Teach me
Your humility. Amen
