August 5
But striking a reef where two seas met, they ran the
vessel aground; and the prow stuck fast and remained immovable, but the stern
began to be broken up by the force of the waves. And the soldiers’ plan was to
kill the prisoners, that none of them should swim away and escape; but the
centurion, wanting to bring Paul safely through, kept them from their intention,
and commanded that those who could swim should jump overboard first and get to
land, and the rest should follow, some on planks, and others on various things
from the ship. And thus it happened that they all were brought safely to land.
Acts 27:41-44.
Paul is on his way to
Rome. He is a prisoner, guarded by a centurion. The events of this story
reveal God’s principle about how He will get us to the place of our destiny.
Like the ship, which was carrying Paul, we sometimes find ourselves running
aground—caught between opposing forces that we cannot overcome. We are unable
to move ahead. Those who would kill or defeat us, given the chance, surround
us. But there is hope, a ‘centurion’, Christ, who will protect and guide us to
safety.
Sometimes, as in this
story, the only way of escape is to use the broken planks, the pieces of a
broken life, to find safety.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God,
thou wilt not despise. Psalm 51:17. Paul
has been reduced to the point that he cannot save himself—only the brokenness of
man will allow the salvation of the Lord to proceed. God wanted Paul in Rome,
and nothing could stand against His will.
Father, Your ways are so
amazing. Out of our broken dreams, our broken plans, our frustrations and
failures, You can provide a path leading to our true destiny in Christ. As we
give up our plans and accept Yours we will find the safety of Your arms. You
will not be swayed by the enemy. You alone will cause us to experience the
victory that has been won by Your Son at the cross. We thank You in the name of
Jesus. Amen.
