August 30

“For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you.  And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever.”  Exodus 12:23,24.

Here we have the promise of God to His people concerning the Passover.  This is an abiding covenant that will last forever.  It is a continual reminder that God’s justice requires a sacrifice for sin, and we know that this Passover event is a shadow of Christ on the cross—paying for our sin.  Note that there was blood placed on the two doorposts, a pattern duplicated by Christ as His hands were nailed on each side of the cross.  Yes, we have a faithful God, who loved us so dearly as to sacrifice His own Son.

This event is forever sealed in our heart, and we will spend eternity seeing God’s grace extended and revealed to us.  We will always be reminded of the purchase of our souls by the death of Jesus.  All praise and honor will go to Him.

This event also reminds us that there is no turning back to the old life of Egypt.  The Israelites complained as they traveled through the wilderness, but God is unwavering.  He knows what is best for us, and this Passover is a constant reminder that the Promised Land is the place where we are to find our purpose and our eternal life.  The blood sacrifice marks a termination of our old way of life and a step toward a new life.

Father, we ask that we have a renewed outlook upon the sacrifice of Your Son.  May we always have a thankful spirit, a humble spirit, that realizes You have accomplished all that we could not do.  You have led us into a new life where You also dwell, and we will not look back.  Amen.
