For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of
power and love and discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
We often think of Jesus
as being meek and mild, yet He knew what it was to be angry over sin. Yes, He
could be angry but He did not sin. To be meek is to be in strength that is
under control. We too are to have strength and power to do the will of God, but
it is strength and control not of our own. It is the character of God displayed
within us.
We are to show God’s love
as well, and you may wonder how love can be shown in power. Again, it is not
our own form of love. It is the agape love from God that speaks the truth with
the intent of achieving the best for the receiver—with no expectation of return
or without any merit on the part of the receiver.
Yes, our lives are to be
marked by discipline. We know that self-control is the fruit of the Spirit.
God would choose to show His love in a spirit of self-control. His love is to
be declared in a way that makes it accessible and friendly to even the hardest
soul. We will need patience and a forgiving spirit as we share this love.
Where did we receive
timidity? Often I think it arises from fear, for we think that we dare not be
bold in our approach to others because we might offend them or place them in an
awkward position. But love will always find a way to break down barriers, and
it is not we who are at risk when we share love—the recipient is at risk if he
does not listen and invite it into his life. There are so many in this world who
have never heard the good news of Christ!
Father, give us a bold
spirit in love. We know that all the power to do this lies with You. I trust
You to discipline me for Your service. I cannot do anything for You without
Your presence. Thank You. Amen.
