August 17
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another
Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know
Him because He abides with you, and will be in you." John 14:16,17.
Christians need to have
the assurance of their eternal acceptance by God. Often we think
negatively—perhaps assuming that God has given up on us because of our sin.
Nothing could be further from the truth. This passage reveals that the Holy
Spirit will be with us forever. He, the Spirit, is a person who is
truth—absolute truth. He is bent upon revealing that truth to us, if we would
just listen. We know Him because He lives within us. Can we imagine that we
would not know someone who is living within us? But some of us, and myself
included, act in this improper way from time to time.
Yes, it takes faith to
believe this. But it has always been by faith, not sight. I am actually
thankful that it is not by sight, for I would soon take for granted something
that was always in sight. Instead we are to be seeking Him in the lives of
those around us. He will not be seen as a living being, but we can ‘see’ Him
with spiritual eyes in the fruit that is being produced. We will see Him in
situations that need correcting, for He will perform acts that go far beyond
human capability to achieve. And He, the Spirit, is always pointing us to
Jesus. We learn more of Jesus with each act of the Spirit.
Thank You, Father, for
making it by faith. Thank You for the eternal assurance of the Holy Spirit, the
great Comforter, who has taken up residence in me. I pray that He will make me
a useful vessel for His residence. Turn me over to Him in every way. I am
available. Thank You and Amen.
