August 15

And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.  If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  1 John 1:5,6.

From the very beginning, when God said, “let there be light,” we have known that God is the light of the word.  That light was revealed through His Son, Jesus.  The Bible often gives illustrations of light shining upon men—as when Gideon and his men held torches and blew trumpets to defeat the Midianites.  In Matthew 5:15,16 we are reminded to let our light shine in such a way as to show our good works.

As a new creation in Christ, we are fully equipped for fellowship with God and for communication with our fellow man.  If we present darkness to the world it is because we deliberately choose to do so—there is no darkness in this new creation.  Our fellowship with God is a priceless gift, and we are foolish to abuse it by dwelling on the negative Adam life that we inherited.  Let us be marked as beacons of light!

This passage in 1 John goes on to explain that we are to walk in the light.  Of course this means that we act according to the light we have been shown.  That light of Jesus goes before us continually.  It defeats the darkness around us.  In fact darkness is the absence of light.  That concept completely defines the world system—a domain of darkness in which we are to walk but of which we are not to become.

Father, let this be another day that looks to Your light.  You have made me a part of this, and I want my light, which is really Yours, to shine in such a way that men will see it.  Do not let me shield or block the light.  Amen.
