Are You Really Set Free?
It was my privilege to have spent about one year in a weekly
Bible study at a maximum-security prison in central Ohio. The
group of about 10 inmates would share their thoughts on the
verses, and I could share mine. We prayed together and I came to
cherish their insights on life.
They worked with the prison Chaplain to produce a daily
devotional. Thousands of other inmates read these wonderful
writings and received encouragement for their future. An example
of one work of theirs is included below. It seems to touch on
the very issue of man’s freedom as it can be found in Christ.
The way of escape is open to all who believe in Him. Galatians
3:22.
Prisoner S.C.C. writes:
“Escape is a huge part of incarceration. Not physical escape,
but mental and spiritual escapes. We learn to cope with our
situation and find our own personal means of escape. Some listen
to music, others work out, create art or poetry, or even work
extra hours—all to escape. All of these seem to work for a
while, but then falter. The only true means of escape is through
Christ Jesus. He strengthens us with His presence. He empowers
us to build the body of Christ through our work. He saves all of
us who believe in Him. Prepare your heart to escape to Christ
today!” (Prisoner to Prisoner Millennium Daily Devotional, July
8, 2000)
This applies to all of us, whether we are incarcerated or not.
What are the boundaries of your “prison”? Are you bound by rigid
viewpoints about life? Are you a victim of poor habits? Do you
impose judgments on your fellowman that only try to imprison him
as well? Have you considered yourself unforgivable? Are you
fearful of release? Must you trust in legalistic behavior rather
than the guidance of the Holy Spirit?
Christ has said “If therefore the Son shall make you free, you
shall be free indeed”. (John 8:36). Can you trust Jesus with
this freedom? It is a spiritual freedom that will lead to a life
that pleases Him. The Holy Spirit will be your guide and
comforter.
