April 28
“And out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is
pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of
the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Genesis 2: 9
As we have seen before, God is interested in gardens. Here we have the tree of
life, from which Adam could have eaten fruit. Unlike the tree of the knowledge
of good and evil, it was not prohibited. (Gen. 2: 16-17). What was this tree? We
know that it was “pleasing to the sight”, and we know that it was caused to grow
out of the ground. It was fitting for the ground to be used in this way because
man was also formed from the ground. (Gen. 2: 7) What did Adam miss by choosing
the wrong tree?
“I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but
through Me.” John 14: 6.
So we know that Jesus was this tree, or at least the fruit of this tree. But
somehow we too are to become a tree–“ And he will be like a tree firmly
planted by streams of water–“ Psalm 1: 3. Jeremiah 17: 8. How can this be?
God has provided all that we need in Christ. God’s way of life has not changed.
History will close on itself when the tree is finally revealed in all of His
Glory.
“And he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from
the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. And on either
side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding
its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the
nations.” Revelation 22: 1-2.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of life in your Son. We are a new creation. Your
life is expressed fully in our life. “It is no longer I who live, but Christ
lives in me–“ Galatians 2: 20. You are so pleasing to our sight,
thank you that we are pleasing in your sight as well. Amen.
