Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.  John 4:34.

Jesus had previously explained that He had food to eat that they did not know about.  Often that seems to describe us as well.  The great result that the Holy Spirit is striving to achieve within us is to find “food” in accomplishing the works of Jesus.  Oh, that we could do this more and more fully.  Our lives need to match the call of Jesus in every respect.  He is to be first-place in all that we do and say.

It is a matter of wanting to be like Jesus.  The early disciples had little understanding, but they began to catch on to the concept of this after the death of Jesus at the cross.  The Holy Spirit was given to them at Pentecost—in a manner not unlike the way we receive the Holy Spirit at our moment of faith in accepting Jesus into our life.  We are new creatures set aside to enjoy the food of Christ and to accomplish His work.

Learning to receive food from Jesus should be the most important priority of our life.  I sometimes learn this by my failures—it is so revealing to look back upon past mistakes and to learn where I missed the opportunity to see Jesus.  I am learning to practice quiet time for listening to the Spirit.  I am learning to wait upon His kind instruction.  I am asking Him today to keep my mouth closed when I have nothing to say that would be uplifting.

Father, I thank You for the gift of the food of Christ.  It is above all other resources.  I look forward to listening to Jesus each moment of the day.  Amen.
